After some annoyance and time I updated my Wii to 4.2 and now I’ve created an easy hack package and a guide to accompany it.

Download: 4.2.easy.hack.pack.zip

Remove all the files from your SD card. We want a blank canvas. Extract the downloaded package, read the readme.txt then enter the “copy to sd” directory. Copy the contents to the root of you SD card.

Now take the SD and stick it in the Wii and fire it up.

On the System Menu hit the little SD icon, now a dialogue should load asking you whether you would like to load boot.elf/.dol. Click yes. (If this doesn’t happen then see the troubleshooting section at the bottom of this post.)

It will load a disclaimer screen, wait a while and then hit “1″ on your wiimote to continue. You will come to a screen telling you which items can be installed, all should be green. Hit “A” on your wiimote to continue. You will be greeted with several options, firstly select “Install The Homebrew Channel…”, this will install the homebrew channel, once completed go back to the menu and next choose “Install DVDX” once that has installed again return to the menu and finally select “BootMii…” you will be taken to a submenu. Select “Install BootMii as boot2″ if that doesn’t install then “Install BootMii as IOS”, most likely you will be able to install it as boot 2. The install of BootMii will also prepare your SD card for you. Now BootMii is installed you can “Return to the main menu” and then “Exit”.

You should be launched into the Homebrew Channel, if not load it from the System Menu. In the hbc you will see 4 applications, first things first load dop-IOS MOD. Hit “A” on your wiimote to pass the welcome screen. Make sure the IOS is set to 36 then press down on your wiimote and select ”install IOS36 v3351/fake sign”, once that’s finished hit “A” to continue and you will be taken to ”Downgrading IOS15 to r257″ just select ”download IOS from NUS” you will need to do this twice for the 2 different versions of IOS15. Hit “A” for ”ES_Identify”, and “NAND permission Patch” when it prompts you. Next you will be prompted to get “IOS36 rev3351″, again just select “download from NUS”, you will be asked a number of times each time just select the same thing.  (“download from NUS”) Once dop-IOS MOD is done patching and restoring IOS15 and IOS36 you can exit to the hbc.

Next load AnyTitleDeleter MOD. Use IOS36 when prompted. Hit “A” when you hit the welcome screen. Once in the app you need to enter “System Titles” and delete: IOS222; IOS223; IOS249; IOS250. (Delete them by presssing “A” then hit “A” a second time to return you to the list.) Once that’s done you can exit back to the hbc.
Now launch cIOS38 rev17 Installer.  Follow through the installer. (Just a case of pressing “A” a few times.) Use Network Installation. Once this has installed exit to the hbc.
Finally launch cIOS 222 Installer. Hit “A” when you hit the welcome screen. Select “Install Custom IOS 202 v65535 (Homebrew)”, use IOS60 when prompted. When the application finishes it will exit to the hbc.

Turn you Wii off and on again. You will see the BootMii menu, use the wiimote to enter the settings menu. (Or use the buttons on the front of your Wii.) Select the first icon and follow the screen. It will dump your nand. This is essential as it gives you brick protection. (If your Wii retarDs or you mess it up you can always just load your nand backup.) Once it’s done it will have created “keys.bin” and “nand.bin” on your SD, back them up and keep them somewhere safe!

That’s it, if all has gone well your Wii is now “hacked” and backed up!  Enjoy! You may want to update your cIOS though, if so then click here.
# Troubleshooting #
-If you click the SD icon and your Wii freezes or it has no effect on your Wii then go here. Download an alternative package, extract it and copy it to your SD card.

The BBC do now support linux for downloads, however they have an autodetecting feature on their website which doesn’t let me install the Air package properly. I contacted them to ask them for a link to the actual Air package but have had no response so I found a way around the problem. (A way around which is actually better than their official application!)

[Requirements!]

You need flvstreamer and kommander, if you don’t have this package installed then you can get it quickly using the apt-get method in terminal!get_iplayer lets you download drm free content

sudo apt-get install flvstreamer kommander-kde3

[Base Installation.]

You need to first install the get_iplayer package which contains the functionality of obtaining files from iPlayer but it comes with no gui! The package is a .deb file for Debian/Ubuntu.

Install: get_iplayer

[Gui Installation.]

Once that has installed you now need to install the gui, I feel most people will find the command line too taxing.

Download: get_iplayer remixed gui

Once you have downloaded that package, navigate to where you saved the file. Right click>Extract Here

Open the folder you just extracted - 109962-get_iplayer_76

Copy the contents of this folder into /home/username/.get_iplayer/ (You will need to create this directory.)

I used that folder location as it’s easy to remember and because it starts with a . it is hidden by default.

[Adding Shortcuts.]

It’s handy to have a desktop icon for easy access to this application. Download: GetiPlayer Desktop Shortcut Remember to move to the desktop once you’ve downloaded it for easy access! If you want to make your own the command to launch get_iplayer with the gui is below.

/home/username/.getiplayer/./ipdl.kmdr

[Setup for Downloading.]

Launch the gui by the shortcut you downloaded/created before. Enter the Settings tab and input the information I below in the corresponding fields.

Set FLVstreamer com: /home/username/.get_iplayer/./flvstreamer

Set Recorder Folder: /home/username/Downloads

Live Stream Rec Dir: /home/username/Downloads

Encode Save Dir: /home/username/Downloads

Channel Ident Folder: /home/username/.get_iplayer/channel

Thumbnail Cache Path: /home/username/.get_iplayer/ThumbCache

That’s it for this howto, the gui is easy enough to master within a few minutes of poking around so I won’t bore you by explaining that! :)

If this helped you be sure to follow me on Twitter!

I was excited to play the new Left 4 Dead game so I got it almost as soon as it was released, I’ve had this review in the works for a while now.

The game is a zombie bloodbath game, you get a thin storyline and that’s not noticed until after you stop playing the game. You are swarmed with zombies which you shoot, smash and blow up. The gaming experience not only will leave you saying “wow” but quite possibly give you nightmares.

The sequel definately lived up to the first game with stunning graphics and exciting environment interactions this bloodbath of a game is sure to get your on the edge of your seat!

The main thing I found particularly exciting about this game was in fact the graphics which made a huge difference in the gaming experience, the bodies of the zombies can get blown, shot and smashed apart with the best detail I have seen out of all the PC games I’ve played so far in this genre! As for the surroundings they are also of high detail which makes the whole picture vivid and memorable. The wide variation of weapons also makes the experience even more gory and exciting.

There are multiple campaigns but I only played 2 of them as the whole game seems to get extremely repeatitive, it is after all just another zombie apocalypse game. It’s a shame that the gameplay is so repeatitive, however it is a hard scenario to make different at each stage. They have included some different enemies within the game as well as 4 character choices. This game will still give you several hours of exciting and scary gameplay. The online capabilities also give you another few hours of excitement.

Again though, this is a steam only game! Why? I do find it disappointing when a cool game is released with Steam because it makes me not want to purchase it, I want the freedom and ease of install a game when I buy it. There is however an unofficial non-Steam version out but you can find that elsewhere. ;)

Overall I rate this game 8/10. Definately worth a look but Steam again hinders the game.

Audacious

Audacious is my preferred choice of audio player for Ubuntu, it can play all the common formats and has an awesome compact gui! I have mainly used the player for playing music on my hard drive, however I have used it to play streaming audio such as radio and it handled all this with ease.

Installation of this application is simple, install via the Ubuntu Software Centre or via the apt-get method in terminal.

sudo apt-get install audacious

If you are using a different distro you may want to refer to your distro’s website or the official Audacious website for more information about how to install the player!

Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the sixth game to be released within the Call of Duty series. I played through the campaign and the specs ops missions, here I am going to attempt to convey my thought s of the game and also what I’d like to see from the next release of the game.

The campaign is actually pretty short, however it is one which has a storyline better than the previous games which was a nice change. The addition of new weapon attachments such as heartbeat sensors and thermal scopes. The graphics are on par with that of Call of Duty: World At War (Which is great, high detail gaming!), the one thing which seems to be improved is the flow of the campaign. The addition of detailed cut scenes also make the gaming experience better as they create a story which directly involves you.

The spec ops section of the game was one which kept me interested for an hour or so but then it because tedious. Spec ops are separate missions which you complete against the clock for extra awards. This addition was interesting but not one I particularly found interesting.

I’m afraid that’s all I have to say on a positive note for this game.

This game was released for the PC with Steam only! Why? This has to be the biggest mistake Activision made, if Call of Duty 7 is released as a Steam only game I certainly will not be purchasing it. We as customers should have the freedom to play the game with or without steam. Granted it locks down piracy but honestly I think they would have sold more copies if it hadn’t been released without Steam as it would cause less havoc for PC gamers.

The gameplay itself is very similar to the other Call of Duty games and we all know where the features of the Call of Duty games have been pulled from. (Counterstrike, Half Life, Medal of Honour, Quake and other such superior games.)

Many features are missing from the online gameplay too such as dedicated servers but I won’t get into that within this review.

Overall I rate the game 6/10. Think twice before buying it.
