This guide was requested to me by many wii users including scotty112 and Johnathan_Doe.

If you have just hacked your 4.0 firmwared wii and want to create and play backups on your wii console, this is the guide for you!

# Requirements #

-Wii Console System Menu 4.0

-Hacked via BaNNeRBoMB or BootMii

-A sucessful installation of The Homebrew Channel and DVDx. (This is essential.)

-A wii console with Wi-Fi connection. (This is also essential.)

-WAD Manager (You need to know how to use it.)

# Files you will need #

-cIOS Installer

-Backup Channel Installer

-DVD Dumper Application

# Installing Custom IOS #

This part is crucial. This custom IOS allows your wii console to load custom DVD’s, this includes films and backed up games.

-Extract “cIOS rev9.zip” and copy the folder entitled “cIOS rev9″ to your SD card in the path SD:/Apps/

-Load “cIOS Installer” from within the homebrew channel.

-Accept the disclaimer and choose network installation.

-Follow the onscreen text until it asks you to “Press any key to reboot.”

(If you received any errors in the steps above you need to refer to the “# Troubleshooting #” section.)

# Installing Backup Channels #

-Extract “BackupChannel.zip”, read the reame. (It won’t bite.)

-You will see 4 .wad files within the “BackupLauncher” directory. Make sure you only install the wad file which matches your wii’s region. (For example Bob with a USA regioned wii would install “Backup Launcher 0.3 Gamma NTSC.wad”.)

-Copy over your selected wad file to SD:/wad/

-Install your .wad via WAD Manager.

# Ripping Wii Games #

Now you have the power to run backups you will probably want to know how to make them.

-Extract the DVD Dumper package, copy over the folder entitled “” to your SD card. In the path SD/Apps/

-Launch the application from the HBC. Note the information when you select the app, it gives size information.

-You will learn the interface quickly. All control is done through the wiimote’s direction pad and the A button to select items.

-The quickest method is via the Network Mode, it will dump the whole game as a .iso to your chosen location. If you select Network Mode and set it up to rip the iso it will give you your wii’s IP address, stick that address in your web browser and you will see a page containing a download link which will start the transfer of the .iso.

-If you decide to use the device mode it will probably cause more problems for you, that’s why I recommend using the network feature of this application.

# Running Backups #

If everything went smoothly you will be ready to run backups! A few notes first though:

-Backup’s need to be burnt to high quality DVD-R’s. There’s specification stated that they need to be burn at 3x speed or similar. However I have burnt many games faster than this, they still work however it’s recommended to use the 3x speed.

-You may find it necessary to use WiiScrubber to check that everything is in order with your ripped .iso.

-Some rips may not work, make sure your disc is clean before ripping.

# Troubleshooting #

-If you receive an error when trying to install the cIOS you may need to use cIOS fixer. Download the .wad here: http://www.mediafire.com/?d2whujno2n2 Load the wad via WAD Manager.

  2. so Mr I have you tried network connection or if it does not work which has happened to me well um… try again re download and keep trying

  3. A quick question about the backup loader, I have a pal wii. But what will happen if I install the region free one? Will it work? (will it let me play NTSC games)

  4. @Core If dvdx installed fine you need to use cIOS Installer to isntall cIOS249, or follow my guide “Wii: Get set with backups on 4.0.” It will help you. You need cIOS249 before you can load backups.

  5. Ok so i have everything working correctly, HBC, backuplauncher, dvdx and everything, but when i burned and tried to play zelda TP it gives me the game disc cannot be read instruction manual blah blah, is that just a bad iso or is there something up with my hbc?

  6. @xXx You need to set the region. Using Gecko is the easiest way to launch different regioned games. Search for it “Gecko OS wii”, it’s a homebrew application.

  7. hello, i wonder that a can run ntsc game on pal console ? my wii has a drivekey but i have problem with some ntsc game that i now they run with backuplauncher0.3b.

  8. @MCWii See my 4.0 update tutorial.

  9. Oh, I’d like to put a request in for a tutorial for users who wish to upgrade their already modded 3.xx boxes to 4.0 so they can benefit from the new features.

    Please and thank you!

  10. Hi there,
I’m on v3.2U with the twilight hack. Do i have to upgrade to 4.0 in order to play backed up ISO’s off an external USB drive and be able to rip games to it as well?
I understand HBC might get corrupt after upgrading to 4.0.
If I do a full wii system cleanup (delete all channels) will this return my wii to factory state so I can do a clean upgrade to 4.0?

  11. @wiin00b
Just to add, instead of cIOS rev9, based on the link above, I used cIOS rev 10. I’m not sure what the diff is, read somewhere if u want to use USB mic have to use rev9 or something. Hopefully someone can clear it up.

  12. Hey firstly I want to thank you for this guide. I just got this wii and updated without knowing it can be hacked. But I want to suggest a fix on the guide so that other people can benefit too.

    1. for installing cIOS section, you have to follow the guide from this link http://wiinewz.com/forums/wii-general-discussion/94992-upgraded-to-4-0-and-had-hbc-but-didnt-have-cios-installed.html (cheers MrI)
    2. After that, continue to the installing the ‘backup launcher’. Run the WAD manager with IOS 249 (it’s the default, don’t choose any other IOS, it won’t work), and install the backup launcher 0.3 gamma according to your region. Btw anybody know what the region free wad do?

That’s it. It took me about 30min to get it done. Hope it helps :)

  13. @MrI is that you sorted now?

  14. I tried to install the cIOS but I always got the error -2011. The same when I use cIOS fixer with the WAD Manager 1.4.

    Any ideas?
